Where pilots are able to climb higher than the lift solely provided by the ridge, the landing circuit is likely to commence from out in the valley, with a more traditional circuit pattern, see opposite.

Here, because the pilot will have a better overall view of the airfield and other air traffic in the area, a right-hand circuit will be adopted.

The down-wind section of the circuit will mean the glider flying close to, or over the gulley (Deadman’s Clough) at a height of between 400 – 800ft, at speeds ranging from 50 – 65kts (55 – 75mph).

It is important for HG and PG pilots to be aware that the ground speed of a glider at this stage, with a tail wind, is likely to be in the region of 60 – 90mph
