Every year we welcome our friends from all over the country for a week of flying vintage gliders over the spectacular Peak District countryside. This years event will run from the 21st until the 28th June 2024.
Each day starts with a briefing during which tasks are set. However, they are always quite informal. As well as a bottle of wine for a good performance on the previous day pilots also try to avoid being awarded the infamous “horn” for any indiscretions.
Many of our club members volunteer to ensure the smooth running of the airfield during the day and to join in with our own club aircraft which are also available for our guests to enjoy. These include our very own beloved T21 “Ken Hardy”. If the wind is in the right direction we do have a set of bungees to enable us to launch aircraft directly onto our ridge which is always an interesting experience for pilots who haven’t done it before.
It’s become a tradition that everyone gathers at the gin tent at the end of the day to enjoy a sundowner before retiring to our clubhouse which offers a well stocked bar with a range of local ales for our guests to enjoy. Our catering facilities also offer a range of food for each evening. This includes the welcome buffet, the ever popular curry night and the more formal Grand Capstan Gala Dinner which is held on the Thursday evening.
Big Bob’s Bar Quiz quiz proved to be a massive hit in 2023 and will return in 2024. There will also be the hotly contested horseshoe competition which takes places on the Friday evening. The trophy was taken away from Camphill by the gang from Oxford in 2023 and so the Camphill Billies will have revenge in mind in 2024!
This has become and increasingly popular event over the last few years and so places are limited. If you would like to attend this year please e-mail Mike Armstrong or Steve Marlor at email@example.com for a registration form. Please also check out our Vintage Rally Youtube channel here.
